WITPiS is a research institute supervised by the Polish Ministry of National Defence. It conducts research, development and implementation work, testing, analyses and expert opinions on military vehicles, armoured equipment and weapons systems for the Polish Armed Forces. Its activities include certification of products, standardisation, testing of wheeled and tracked vehicles, materials engineering and autonomous vehicle development. The institute also supports other state bodies such as the Police, State Fire Service and Border Guard, and works on civilian as well as military vehicle technologies. Its roots trace back to the Military Institute of Engineering Research founded in 1927, and it received its current name in 1965. Its structure includes the Research Division with accredited laboratories, the Development Division, a Product Certification Body, an Expert Office and a Standardisation Office. It holds authority to award doctoral and habilitation degrees in mechanical engineering.
