412 Food Rescue
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
About
Founded in 2015, 412 Food Rescue is a charity based in Pittsburgh, United States working on poverty & hunger, environment & climate.
412 Food Rescue is a nonprofit based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that works to reduce food waste and food insecurity in Southwestern Pennsylvania. It rescues fresh surplus food from grocery stores, wholesalers, restaurants, caterers, urban farms and other food businesses, and transports it directly to nonprofit and community organisations such as housing authorities, daycare centres, churches and community centres. Those organisations then provide the food to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. The organisation does not bank food and does not provide food directly to individuals. Volunteers called Food Rescue Heroes carry out most deliveries using a mobile app, with each rescue taking about 30 minutes. Donated food is vetted with receiving organisations before placement. About 87% of rescued food is fresh, including produce, meat, dairy and bread. The organisation also works on education and advocacy about food waste and its environmental impact, and offers its technology to help organisations in other cities run food rescue operations. Founded in 2015, it is a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation recognised as tax exempt.
