About
Founded in 2011, African Arts Trust is a grant-making foundation based in Up Marden, United Kingdom working on arts & culture.
The African Arts Trust is a grant-making charitable trust, registered with the Charity Commission in 2011, that supports emerging visual artists working on the African continent. It offers arts bursaries and grants, including core funding for organisations and project funding for one-off or annual art projects, with a focus on grass roots organisations that support professional practising artists. Grant making is concentrated on Eastern Africa. The Trust does not fund theatre, dance, music or literature. It was founded by collector and philanthropist Robert Devereux after an auction of his private collection of post-war British art at Sotheby's, London, in 2010. The Trust operates a gallery in Nairobi, Kenya, and builds a collection of African art from artists who apply for support. Applicants first complete a questionnaire, and the Trust then invites a full application. Applications can be submitted at any time during the year, with decisions usually within a month and grants taking up to three months to process. Grants can be one-off, annual or multi-year for up to three years.
