After The Races
Elkton, Maryland, United States
About
Founded in 2011, After The Races is a charity based in Elkton, United States working on animal welfare.
After The Races is a Maryland-based non-profit charity that rehabilitates and rehomes retired Thoroughbred racehorses. Based on its farm in Elkton, it takes in horses from racing backstretch programmes, racing professionals and private owners. Each horse receives a veterinary intake evaluation, a rehabilitation plan, behavioural transition and, where appropriate, retraining before being matched with a suitable long-term adoptive home. The organisation also works to show the versatility of the Thoroughbred beyond racing, encourages racehorse owners to plan for aftercare, and engages with schools, clubs and the equine industry through educational talks and events. Since its incorporation in January 2011, it reports serving more than 1,000 retiring racehorses.
