Alwane is a French non-profit association, founded in 2012 in Lyon-Villeurbanne, that supports displaced and refugee Syrian children whose schooling has been disrupted. It works mainly through civic-led initiatives and runs cultural and socio-cultural events such as concerts, theatre, films, exhibitions and talks to raise awareness of the situation of these children and to create exchanges between local residents and newly arrived Syrians in the region. The association supports families, including helping several Syrian families settle in Lyon, and also assists Syrian refugees and detained political prisoners in Syria. It is politically and religiously independent, is staffed entirely by volunteers from Syria and Lyon, and is affiliated with the Comité de Développement et de Secours Syrien (CODSSY). Its funding comes from membership fees, donations and fundraising evenings.
