About

Founded in 1993, amaZOOnico is a non-governmental organisation based in Tena, Ecuador working on nature & wildlife conservation, animal welfare, environment & climate +1 more.

amaZOOnico is a non-profit NGO in the Ecuadorian Amazon, near Tena in Napo province, that rehabilitates wild animals confiscated from illegal trade and reintroduces them to their natural habitats where possible. It cares for more than 400 animals that cannot be released, and runs environmental education for visitors, schools and local communities. Its work includes a partner project that protects 1750 hectares of rainforest, a trilingual school for the neighbouring community and the Liana Lodge ecotourism project. Founded in 1993 by Angelika Raimann and Remigio Canelos, a Swiss-Kichwa couple, together with Christine von Steiger, the organisation is largely run by Kichwa people and works with neighbouring Kichwa communities, buying fruit for the animals and handmade goods for its shop from them. It relies on donations, sponsorships, and the work of permanent staff and international volunteers.
