East County Magazine is a nonprofit, independent online news site and radio show serving San Diego County's inland East County region. It was founded in 2008 after the 2003 and 2007 firestorms, to fill a news gap in towns with no local newspaper and to provide real-time wildfire coverage. Its stated mission is to provide in-depth news and events coverage for the inland areas of San Diego County, with a focus on social justice, diverse and multicultural voices, community concerns, environmental and land use issues, and nonpartisan political coverage. It covers local government, elections, public safety, health, education, the environment and the arts, and includes special sections such as Visit East County, People Power, Tribal Beat and Refugee Voices. The organisation also operates East County Wildfire & Emergency Alerts, which sends free e-mail and social media alerts across San Diego County, and produces the East County Magazine Radio Show on KNSJ 89.1 FM. It runs community events and forums and relies on reader donations, sponsorships and volunteers. The news site is published by the 501(c)(3) Heartland Coalition and supported by the nonprofit East County Media. The publication reports having won more than 150 journalism awards.
