The Eselfreunde im Havelland e.V. is a registered non-profit animal welfare association based in Paaren im Glien, Brandenburg, near Berlin. Founded in 2013, it works on a volunteer basis to protect, rescue and provide appropriate housing for donkeys. The association takes in donkeys from private owners who can no longer care for them, typically from difficult circumstances, and currently looks after around 30 animals. It does not import or buy animals from abroad. It also runs educational work, including courses on donkey and mule keeping, a donkey driving licence, and work with children and young people to promote animal, nature and environmental protection. Guided donkey hikes in the Havelland are offered, and the association states that all income from these activities goes to its animal welfare work. Donations, sponsorships and in-kind gifts are accepted, and donations of EUR 300 or more receive a receipt. The association presents at events such as the Grüne Woche with an information stand and runs an information mobile.
