Eselrettung Österreich is a privately financed association based in Leoben, Austria, that rescues donkeys in need from neglect, isolated keeping, and slaughter, primarily in Austria and neighbouring countries. It takes in, treats, socialises and rehomes donkeys, and cares for older or sick animals at its sites, with many of its donkeys living in donkey herds. The association also supports owners who can no longer keep their animals due to illness, financial hardship or separation, through temporary housing and rehoming. It is funded by donations, membership fees and sponsorships (Patenschaften), with helpers working on a voluntary basis. The association also runs visits to schools, kindergartens, senior homes and facilities for people with disabilities, with talks on donkeys and their use in animal-assisted interventions. It relies on the public for donations of feed, bedding, equipment and similar items.
