About

Founded in 1987, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue & Sanctuary is a charity based in Southwest Ranches, United States working on animal welfare, medical research.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is a non-profit horse rescue and sanctuary in Southwest Ranches, Broward County, Florida. It takes in horses, particularly those that are asymptomatic carriers of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), and provides them lifetime sanctuary rather than euthanasia, sale or transfer. The organisation keeps a mixed herd of EIA-positive and EIA-negative horses, and also cares for donkeys, a hinny, pigs, goats, sheep and a cat. It supports research into EIA by providing blood samples drawn by a licensed veterinarian and allowing observational study, and it educates the public to dispel myths about the disease. It also runs volunteer and community programmes. The ranch was founded by Susan Young in the 1970s as J & W Ranch, moved after its original site was sold in 1987, and has since operated on land leased from Broward County. It describes itself as a no-kill shelter and the only safe haven for EIA carriers in the United States.
