FRI is a Norwegian membership organisation working to improve the rights and living conditions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, non-binary and other people who break with gender and sexual norms. It is run democratically by its members through a national assembly (landsmøte), a central board and regional chapters (fylkeslag) across Norway. Its work includes political advocacy on issues such as legal gender recognition, gender-affirming care, hate crime, pride and the rainbow flag, and international human rights. It runs local activities such as cafés, social groups, hiking and senior meetups, and organises pride events in several regions. Through the Rosa kompetanse programmes it provides paid training for schools, justice agencies and health and social care services. The organisation traces its roots to DNF-48, founded in 1948, and has worked for LGBTQ+ rights in Norway since 1950.
