About
Founded in 2013, Healthy Black Families is a community organisation based in Berkeley, United States working on health, community development, children & youth +2 more.
Healthy Black Families Inc. is a Berkeley-based nonprofit founded in 2013 by Dr. Vicki Alexander, MD, MPH, after the Community Advisory Board for the Berkeley Infant Health program was disbanded. It works to advance health equity, social equity and justice, with a focus on Black individuals and families in Berkeley and the wider East Bay area of California. The organisation runs programmes in maternal and family wellness, healing and cultural education, nutrition and health promotion, early childhood and school readiness, youth leadership and creative expression, housing justice and displacement prevention, and advocacy and policy change. Its programmes are designed with community members and grounded in cultural pride, trust and mutual care. Healthy Black Families also works to make policy and systems more equitable, convenes community forums, and runs a community library on revolutionary theory, culture and practice. It moved into a new community space on Adeline Street in South Berkeley in April 2025 and is funded largely by individual donations, including a monthly donor programme.
