About

Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark is a community organisation based in Tourmakeady, Ireland working on heritage, environment & climate, nature & wildlife conservation +2 more.

Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark is a community-driven initiative in County Mayo and County Galway, Ireland, working toward UNESCO Global Geopark status. The region covers over 1,500 km² around Lough Carra, Lough Mask and part of Lough Corrib, and includes many communities in a Gaeltacht area. The geopark promotes the region's geology, heritage, culture and landscape, and works on protection, education and sustainable economic development. It runs education resources for schools, a heritage network for local historical societies, and a Management Master Plan for 2022 to 2028. The project was initially led by volunteers from about 20 communities and local NGOs, through a company limited by guarantee, with funding from state and multi-agency partners, and is led by Geological Survey Ireland. The geopark is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.
