KölnPUB Publikum und Biotechnologie e.V. is a non-profit association based in Frechen near Cologne, founded in 1996. It aims to make the natural sciences understandable and accessible to the public and to promote interest in modern biotechnology. Its main activity is a school laboratory (Schülerlabor) where school classes from grades 8 to 13 carry out experiments in biology, chemistry and molecular biology, including PCR, DNA isolation, microscopy, photosynthesis and heart physiology. Around 140 school classes visit each year. The association also runs holiday courses for children and young people, offers teacher training, and conducts officially recognised project leader courses under the German Genetic Engineering Safety Ordinance (GenTSV), which are recognised nationwide. Its work is supported by membership fees, course income and cooperation with zdi Innovation.NRW, universities and research institutions. School classes from North Rhine-Westphalia usually participate free of charge, funded through the local zdi network where available.
