About
Founded in 2002, Navopatia Field Station is a non-governmental organisation based in Mexico working on nature & wildlife conservation, science & research, education.
Navopatia Field Station is a non-profit organisation incorporated in 2002 that works on conservation, education and research. Its off-grid field camp on the Agiabampo estuary, on the Sea of Cortez in southern Sonora, Mexico, serves as the base for its work. The station focuses on the Pitayal, or coastal thornscrub, an endangered and under-studied ecosystem. Its research includes long-term wintering bird and vegetation monitoring, landbird and waterbird surveys, banding of passerines, small mammal and camera-trap studies, reptile inventories, hummingbird nesting studies, and plant transect sampling. It also runs local outreach and education, hosts students, researchers, school groups and eco-tourists, and offers internships. The station operates seasonally, typically from mid-December to mid-March, and works with the local ejido community and with Mexican and American partner organisations. Its stated aims are to understand and protect the landscapes of southern Sonora and to document and reduce the threats posed by agricultural development and aquaculture.
