OMEP, the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education, is an international, non-governmental and non-profit organisation founded in Prague in 1948. It works worldwide to advance the rights of young children, with a particular focus on the right to education and care from birth to age eight. Its work includes increasing access to quality early childhood education and care, sharing pedagogical knowledge, promoting research and training of early childhood personnel, encouraging family education, and advocating at UN, UNESCO and local and regional policy levels. OMEP operates through national committees in over 80 countries, organised into regions including Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and North America and the Caribbean, and is coordinated by a World Executive Committee. Its World Secretariat is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. OMEP holds special consultative status with the UN, UNESCO and ECOSOC.
