Ronald McDonald Haus Österreich is an independent non-profit association, operating as Verein Ronald McDonald Kinderhilfe since 1987 under the brand name Ronald McDonald Haus. It builds and runs family accommodation in direct proximity to paediatric hospitals in Austria, so that families of children with serious or injured conditions can stay together during treatment without high hotel costs or long travel. Houses are operated in Vienna (Kinderspitalgasse and Borschkegasse), Graz, Salzburg and Wiener Neustadt, hosting around 1,700 families a year. The association is funded entirely through donations, including contributions from McDonalds Österreich, its franchisees and guests, and relies on paid staff and roughly 100 volunteers. It is part of the international Ronald McDonald House network based in Chicago. Families contribute a nightly fee of 15 euros where they can, but no family is turned away for inability to pay.
