Samenkorn e.V. is a German registered non-profit association based in Lüdenscheid. It works as a partner association to Proyecto Ijatz in Guatemala, a local initiative founded in the late 1990s by Maria Christine Zauzich. Together the two organisations provide scholarships and educational support to young people, particularly from indigenous Maya communities, so they can succeed within their own living and sociocultural environment. The scholarship programme includes workshops and events on indigenous history, customs and languages to strengthen cultural identity and self-esteem, as well as seminars on critical thinking, communication and other academic and personal skills. Governance is by volunteer board members in Germany and a five-person board in Guatemala, with a project leader coordinating the link between the two sides and a local team in Guatemala supporting the students.
