About
Founded in 1987, Shelter Don Bosco is a non-governmental organisation based in Mumbai, India working on children & youth, education, employment & skills +1 more.
Shelter Don Bosco is a non-governmental organisation based in Mumbai, India, working since 1987 with street children and young people who are roofless and rootless. Initiated by the Salesian Society in the Province of Mumbai, it is part of the Don Bosco family of institutions serving youth, especially marginalised young people. Its work is modelled on the approach of Don Bosco, who began practical trade training for working boys in nineteenth-century Turin. The shelter operates as an open house where children and young people living on the street can seek help for their immediate needs, and it provides a child care institute for children in need of care and protection. Its activities include non-formal education, enrolment of younger children in government schools, and skill training in trades such as cycle repair, motor winding and tailoring, alongside support for older boys who choose to leave informal rag-picking and casual labour. Information about the organisation is shared through an annual report and its Shelter Samachar publication.
