About

Singing Wells is a non-profit organisation based in Orpington, United Kingdom working on heritage, arts & culture.

Singing Wells is a project that records, archives and shares the traditional music and dance of East Africa. It is a collaboration between Abubilla Music, a London record label, and Ketebul Music, a non-profit organisation in Nairobi, Kenya, which works to identify, preserve and promote the region's diverse music traditions. The project is supported by the UK charity Abubilla Music Foundation. A mobile recording studio takes a team to remote villages in Kenya and Uganda, where local music groups are recorded in their own communities. Recordings are post-produced into an archive, with the aim of making them accessible to musicians, music lovers and ethnomusicologists. The project also works with musicians to keep traditions in practice and to bring them into modern music, and its Influences series fuses traditional and contemporary styles. Its stated long-term goal is to document the major traditional music styles of every East African country.
