Surya is a Czech civic association that founded and supports the Sun School in Kargyak, a remote village at about 4,200 m in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, India. The school was built in 2008 using solar energy and local renewable materials, and offers children an education that was previously unavailable locally. Beyond teaching core subjects, Surya's work includes hygiene and first-aid training, support for traditional crafts, reforestation and a winter greenhouse project. The association funds its work through private donations, a donor club, child adoption sponsorships and calendar sales, and does not receive EU or Czech government subsidies. It recruits volunteer teachers and coordinators who spend time in the village and runs fundraising concerts and exhibitions in the Czech Republic. Donations to the association can be deducted from the tax base.
