Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
About
Founded in 2018, The Conflict and Environment Observatory is a non-governmental organisation based in Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, United Kingdom working on environment & climate, peace & conflict, nature & wildlife conservation.
The Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS) is a UK charity that monitors and raises awareness of the environmental dimensions of armed conflicts and military activities. It documents environmental harm caused by war, including pollution, infrastructure damage and ecosystem loss, and works to increase legal and policy protection for people and ecosystems before, during and after conflicts. Its work includes remote assessment of environmental incidents, particularly in Ukraine, research and publications, and advocacy in international forums such as the UN Environment Assembly, the International Law Commission process on protection of the environment in relation to armed conflicts, and military emissions reporting under the UNFCCC. CEOBS also develops tools for environmental safeguarding in mine action, including the Green Field Tool, and supports citizen science and academic networks on conflict and the environment. It was launched in 2018 after six years as the Toxic Remnants of War Project and is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Its work is international in scope, covering conflicts across many regions.
