It acts as an advocate and partner for children, young people and families in socially disadvantaged situations, aiming to improve their everyday opportunities under the principle of equal opportunity for all children and young people. The association runs 24 Kinderhäuser (children's houses, including family centres), a MehrGenerationenWohnen intergenerational housing project, a children and youth club, two youth cafés, an open youth meeting point, and a family education centre recognised as an NRW education provider. It also runs various projects, many focused on environmental education and intergenerational work. Its main areas of work are in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr. The association is governed by an elected board and a managing director, with volunteers playing a central role, and it is funded mainly through donations and membership fees.
