The trust's mission is to educate through the celebration and promotion of aviation past and present, and it works to preserve New Zealand's aviation heritage. The biennial airshow, first held in 1988 as a country fair and airshow, brings together Warbird, classic and modern aircraft, and is held over the Easter weekend. Alongside the airshow, the trust runs a scholarship programme that supports Warbird pilots, engineers and display team personnel. The organisation is governed by a Community Trust Board and draws visitors from New Zealand and overseas. Its Wanaka base is at the airport, with a postal address in Wanaka.
