About
Founded in 1981, Wirt Għawdex is a non-governmental organisation based in Victoria, Malta working on heritage, environment & climate.
Wirt Għawdex is a voluntary non-governmental organisation founded in 1981 to foster knowledge of the heritage of Gozo and Comino and to safeguard their natural, archaeological, historical and anthropological patrimony. It is governed by an elected committee and is a non-profit organisation funded mainly through membership fees, publication sales, voluntary contributions, sponsorships and donations, with site revenue reinvested in restoration and conservation. Its work includes restoring and managing historical sites under management agreements with the Government and opening them to the public through volunteers, lobbying authorities and submitting representations on development applications, running public lectures, tours, school presentations and publications, and hosting Sixth Form students for volunteer placements. The society was originally formed in the early 1970s around restoration of the Citadel in Victoria and was renamed in 1981 to cover the whole of Gozo and Comino. It is headquartered at Dar il-Gvernatur, Gozo, Malta, and is a full member of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organizations and the Gozo NGOs Association.
