Alfa Fuels is a Horizon Europe European research project focused on developing innovative sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology to reduce aviation's reliance on fossil fuels. The project addresses key challenges including high production costs and sustainability issues through breakthroughs in microbial fuel precursor production and solar-driven photochemistry. The technology harnesses solar energy to convert CO2-derived molecules into kerosene-like fuel using microorganisms and photochemical processes. The project employs a circular, zero-waste approach that maximizes resource efficiency by valorizing all cellular components in a biorefinery, co-producing valuable products such as starch and hydrogen. Alfa Fuels aims to reach Technology Readiness Level 5 through novel bioreactors, pilot-scale trials, and industry collaboration to support accelerated upscaling and decarbonization of the aviation industry.
