Algaebiogas is an EU-funded project (Grant Agreement ECO/12/333018 under CIP ECO Innovation program) coordinated by AlgEn, a biotech start-up specializing in algae technology systems. The project focuses on market introduction of innovative algal-bacterial treatment of biogas digestate and feedstock production. AlgEn was founded by four partners: a biologist, two microbiologists, and a mathematician, with three employed full-time. The company operates in partnership with KOTO, a Slovenian biogas plant operator with 165 employees. The first demonstration centre is established at KOTO biogas plant in Ljubljana, showcasing full-scale algal treatment technology that simultaneously addresses digestate disposal challenges, produces energetic substrates, recycles CO2 emissions, and recovers nutrients on-site.
