The Apollo Project is a Horizon Europe-funded consortium demonstrating the use of dual-fuel ammonia engines in maritime transport. Led by shipowner Eidesvik Offshore in partnership with Wärtsilä, Breeze Ship Design, and other industry stakeholders, the project retrofits the platform supply vessel Viking Energy with an ammonia-fueled engine to operate in the North Sea for Equinor. The dual-fuel engine enables 70% replacement of conventional fuel with green ammonia, reducing CO2 and NOx emissions significantly. The project supports ammonia bunkering infrastructure development, validates business cases for maritime ammonia adoption, and enables technology transfer to other vessel types through replication studies.
