Balmorel is an open-source energy system model designed to address challenges in energy transitions with increasing variable renewable energy sources. Released in 2001, it enables modeling of electricity systems, district heating, and energy infrastructure across multiple countries and time horizons. The model combines operational and investment optimization capabilities, allowing flexible temporal and spatial representation. Developed through collaboration between public and private research institutions, Balmorel has been applied to over 20 countries and underpins more than 100 scientific publications. The model supports unit commitment analysis, biomass transport optimization, and can be extended through coupling with OptiFlow. Built on GAMS, it enables diverse applications for energy scenarios, policy analysis, and transition assessments.
