About
Founded in 2011, Better Biomass is a ngo headquartered in Delft, Netherlands specializing in Biomass, Biogas.
Better Biomass is a voluntary certification scheme established in 2011 and recognized by the European Commission since 2012 to demonstrate compliance with mandatory sustainability criteria for biofuels under the Renewable Energy Directive. The system certifies that biomass used for energy, fuels, and bio-based products meets international sustainability standards and chain-of-custody requirements. Better Biomass is managed by NEN (Dutch Standardization Institute), a member of CEN and ISO. The underlying sustainability criteria are published in norm NTA 8080 and were developed by a broad working group representing market parties, government, and civil society organizations. In November 2018, the Dutch government approved Better Biomass for voluntary compliance assessment of solid biomass for energy applications. In July 2021, Better Biomass received positive technical assessment for the second edition of the Renewable Energy Directive. The certification scheme operates on principles of openness, transparency, and consensus, with governance through the Expert Committee and independent accredited certification bodies.
