About
Founded in 2023, Bioctane is a ngo specializing in Biogas, Biomass.
Bioctane is a European Union-funded research initiative coordinated by Patricia Pizarro at Rey Juan Carlos University and IMDEA Energy. The project synergistically integrates biotechnology and thermochemical catalysis to convert complex organic waste from agriculture, industry, and municipalities into market-ready renewable jet fuel. The process involves four main work packages: (1) biotechnological conversion of organic wastes to platform molecules (2,3-butanediol and acetoin), (2) hydrothermal gasification of fermentation residues to hydrogen, (3) catalytic conversion of platform molecules to jet-fuel range hydrocarbons, and (4) process evaluation and techno-economic assessment. The project aims to contribute to the EU's ReFuelEU goal of 35% advanced fuels in aviation fuel mixtures by 2050, while maximizing carbon use efficiency and recovering nutrients for reuse. Bioctane employs a disruptive interdisciplinary strategy combining multifunctional catalysts, process flow modeling, and extensive environmental impact assessment.
