Biomethaverse is a 5-year European innovation project demonstrating advanced biomethane production pathways across five countries: France, Greece, Italy, Sweden, and Ukraine. The project combines anaerobic digestion with bioelectrochemical systems (BES) and electromethanogenesis to produce gas grid quality biomethane (95% CH4) at reduced costs. Key technologies include in-situ and ex-situ electromethanogenesis, which increase biomethane productivity by 20-43% using renewable electricity from solar and wind. Demonstration sites operate across conventional anaerobic digestion and gasification platforms, targeting circular economy approaches. Goals include achieving 113 Mt CO2eq GHG savings, creating 294,000 jobs, and establishing market-ready, replicable solutions for European biomethane production by 2030.
