Thessaloniki, Thermi, Greece
About
BioSFerA is a ngo headquartered in Thessaloniki, Greece specializing in Biogas, Hydrogen.
BioSFerA (Biofuels production from Syngas FERmentation for Aviation and maritime use) is a European research and innovation project funded under the Horizon 2020 programme (Grant Agreement No 884208). The project aims to develop and validate an integrated value chain combining thermochemical and biochemical processes to produce sustainable aviation and maritime biofuels. The technology addresses climate change and environmental protection policy targets by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from aviation and marine transport. The consortium employs advanced process simulation (Aspen Plus), lifecycle analysis (LCA), social lifecycle analysis (SLCA), techno-economic assessment, and risk management methodologies to optimize production pathways. Key process steps include gasification, gas-liquid fermentation, liquid-substrate fermentation, extraction and purification of lipids from oleaginous yeasts, and hydrotreatment to produce hydrotreated TAGs (triacylglycerols) as drop-in biofuels. The project includes pilot-scale demonstration and aims to produce at least two barrels of hydrotreated TAGs as final demonstration products.
