Blacks in Green (BIG) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 2007 dedicated to closing America's racial wealth gap through the green economy and environmental justice. Operating primarily in Chicago's West Woodlawn neighborhood, BIG implements its Sustainable Square Mile System—based on 8 Principles of Green-Village-Building—to create self-sustaining, walkable communities where African American residents own businesses and property. The organization develops integrated economies spanning renewable energy, sustainable food production, green housing, ecotourism, and waste management. BIG emphasizes household energy independence, food production, water conservation, and waste recycling.
