Canopy Offshore Wind is a proposed floating offshore wind project located approximately 20 miles off the coast of Humboldt County, Northern California, in waters exceeding 2,300 feet deep. Developed by RWE, a global leader in offshore wind with 20 years of experience and 19 successful offshore wind projects, Canopy represents one of the nation's first floating offshore wind initiatives. The project secured federal seabed lease rights in December 2022. With planned capacity of 1.6 GW, Canopy will generate sufficient clean energy to supply up to 600,000 households equivalent. The project is expected to begin operations by the mid-2030s, pending permitting and regulatory approval. RWE is conducting offshore studies to inform project design and working collaboratively with federal, state, and local officials, Tribal Nations, community groups, businesses, educational institutions, and the local fishing industry to secure necessary permits and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
