About
Center for Applied Energy Research is a non-profit headquartered in Würzburg, Germany specializing in Solar, Hydrogen, Energy Storage.
The Center for Applied Energy Research e.V. (CAE) is a non-profit applied energy research institute in Würzburg, Germany. It develops practical solutions for renewable energy, energy efficiency and a climate-neutral energy supply, working at the interface between basic research and industrial applied research. Its research areas include photovoltaics and grid-friendly storage (including ultracapacitor systems and battery storage strategies), green hydrogen and hydrogen metrology, solid oxide electrolysis integration, thermal management, phase change materials, aerogels and porous functional materials, and climate-efficient buildings and districts, including building greening and building-integrated PV. The institute operates an Energy Efficiency Center and an Innovation Hub for hydrogen technology, and offers contract research, consulting and knowledge transfer, mainly to SMEs and industry. It is a registered charitable association (e.V.) and became an authorised IGF research association in late 2025.
