ChalkiOn is the first energy community in the Dodecanese, established on May 19, 2021, as a cooperative structure enabling local citizens to participate in clean energy production and consumption. The organization operates a fully operational solar power station with nominal capacity of 999.47 kWp, comprising 2,246 photovoltaic panels (445 Wp each) and 4 inverters. The plant is located on 20 acres near Kania beach and covers Chalki Island's annual electricity needs. Members benefit through virtual net metering, which directly reduces energy bills for households, SMEs, and public services. The community is backed by local citizens and the Municipality of Chalki, with support from sponsors including PPC SA, Vinci Energies/Omexom Hellas, Akuo Energy, and Spyropoulos SA. ChalkiOn participates in European initiatives including the ACCELaRATE platform and LIFE projects, promoting knowledge-sharing and capacity-building for energy communities across Europe. The organization was recognized in the EU State of the Union 2025 report and awarded the Climate Protection award among 300 submissions from 34 countries.
