About
Founded in 2023, CharCool is a ngo headquartered in Vicenza, Italy specializing in Energy Storage, Other.
CharCool is a European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder project combining natural energy and nature-based solutions for clean and efficient cooling. The core innovation is a heat-driven cooling system with modular thermochemical energy storage using biochar composites impregnated with inorganic salts, enabling seasonal storage of renewable or waste heat. The system operates on water as refrigerant at temperatures between 60-150°C, offering a natural, safe alternative to electricity-driven cooling. The project aims to reduce volumes and costs of current sorption systems by 40% and 50% respectively, while decoupling refrigeration from electricity grids and increasing renewable energy penetration. Led by University of Padova, the consortium comprises five university research laboratories and one high-tech SME from five EU countries, including partners from Italy, Poland, Spain, Netherlands, and Belgium.
