Founded in 2022, Coldspark is a renewable energy company headquartered in Norway specializing in Hydrogen, Biogas.
Coldspark is a 42-month Horizon Europe research project launched in June 2022, coordinated by SEID AS. The project develops breakthrough non-thermal plasma technology for methane cracking to produce decarbonized hydrogen and high-value carbon without catalysts or water. The catalyst-free process operates at low temperature and pressure, offering reduced capital and operating costs compared to steam methane reforming and water electrolysis. The technology is designed for containerized deployment near natural gas or biogas infrastructure, enabling decentralized hydrogen production. Key innovations include optimized plasma reactors, advanced power supplies, and gas separation systems. The consortium includes nine partners across Europe: SEID AS (Norway), NORCE (Norway), University of Stavanger, University of Liverpool, Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, IBBK Biogas Network (Germany), and Europroject (Bulgaria). The project progresses through eight work packages covering lab-scale prototyping, optimization, scale-up, industrial design, and sustainability assessment. ColdSpark has received the EU Seal of Excellence and STEP Label recognition.
