CRM-geothermal is a Horizon Europe-funded research and development initiative that combines the extraction of critical raw materials (CRM) with geothermal heat production. The project pursues a holistic approach to evaluate and extract CRM from geothermal fluids across Europe and East Africa. Key objectives include establishing a comprehensive database of fluid data across different geological settings, developing and optimizing extraction technologies for selected CRM elements, demonstrating pilot-scale extraction technology at field sites, and assessing environmental, social, and economic viability of extraction processes. The project addresses EU strategic autonomy in raw material supply while supporting climate neutrality goals by 2050.
