E-TANDEM is a Horizon Europe-funded research project (Grant Agreement 101083700, €3.33M) that runs for 42 months starting November 1, 2022. The project aims to develop a disruptive, once-through hybrid catalytic route for producing higher oxygenate e-fuels (HOEFs)—diesel-like fuels composed of higher alcohols or ethers—using CO2 as the sole carbon source and renewable energy as the sole energy input. The process integrates three major catalysis branches: high-pressure electrocatalysis for syngas production, solid thermocatalysis for hydrocarbon synthesis, and molecular chemocatalysis for in-situ oxo-functionalization. E-TANDEM focuses on fuel performance, compatibility with current internal combustion engines, and suitability for fuel infrastructure. The consortium comprises research institutions and partners across 8 European countries, including the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Zagreb, with support from the Spanish research council (CSIC) and the Max-Planck-Institute for chemical energy conversion.
