The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (Ecreee) is a regional specialized agency formally inaugurated on July 6, 2010, with headquarters in Praia, Cape Verde. Established under ECOWAS regulation C/REG.23/11/08 and governed by regulation PC/REX.5/06/2020, it serves as the leading facilitator for advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency across West African nations. The center operates ECOWREX, a strategic energy data platform providing evidence-based planning support and analytical tools to energy sector stakeholders. Core programs include regional certification of sustainable energy skills, clean mini-grid development, rural electrification, energy efficiency in buildings and industry, technology transfer, and gender mainstreaming in energy access. It collaborates with international partners including UNIDO, AfDB, GIZ, AECID, and IRENA, supported by governments of Austria, Spain, the United States, European Union, Germany, and Brazil.
