EMB3Rs (User-driven Energy-Matching & Business Prospection Tool for Industrial Excess Heat/Cold Reduction, Recovery and Redistribution) is an innovative digital platform developed under the EU's Horizon 2020 research program (grant agreement No 847121). Launched in September 2019, the platform automates and simplifies the analysis process for identifying viable industrial excess heat and cold recovery opportunities. It replaces manual, expert-intensive evaluation methods with an intuitive, user-friendly tool accessible to non-expert users. The platform comprises multiple integrated modules: a Techno-Economic Optimization module for feasibility assessment and cost-benefit analysis; a Geographic Information System (GIS) module for spatial planning and infrastructure mapping; a Market module supporting pool, peer-to-peer, and community-based trading mechanisms; and a Business module evaluating financial viability from both private and socio-economic perspectives. EMB3Rs has been validated through case studies across Europe, including applications in industrial parks, district heating networks in Nordic countries, Portuguese waste-to-energy integration, Greek industrial facilities, and UK manufacturing sectors. The platform addresses critical barriers to excess heat utilization by providing decision support for industrial stakeholders, energy communities, and district heating operators seeking cost-effective decarbonization pathways.
