Energie Coöperatie Oostwold is a member-owned cooperative established in 2016 with the mission to make Oostwold and surrounding villages self-sufficient in electricity. The cooperative operates the Zonnewal project, a unique 1,600-meter embankment combining noise reduction, renewable energy generation, and recreation infrastructure. With over 9,000 m² of solar panels, the Zonnewal generates sufficient electricity for approximately 870 households while reducing A7 highway noise by 10 dB. The project also includes walking, cycling, and equestrian paths integrated into a 9.3-hectare natural area. Additionally, the cooperative is developing Zonnepark Oostwold, a 1.1-hectare solar park on a former landfill. Members receive 100% renewable electricity through partner Energie Vanons and benefit from cooperative profit-sharing arrangements.
