Energiecoöperatie Heumen is a citizen-led energy cooperative established in 2019 to develop and own local renewable energy projects in the municipality of Heumen. The cooperative aims to create an energy-neutral municipality by 2050 through community participation in solar, wind, and hydropower projects. Members gain ownership stakes, share in revenues, and collectively decide on project development and landscape integration. The cooperative works with local developers GroenLeven and Enovos on a 20-hectare solar park (Zonnepark Teersche Sluispolder) and participates in a hydropower initiative at a weir on the Maas river near Nederasselt in collaboration with the Grave energy cooperative. A portion of revenues funds social and sustainability projects in local communities.
