EPISODE (European Produced sustaInable SODium-ion battEries for stationary applications) is a Horizon Europe-funded consortium project that commenced in December 2024 with a 42-month duration. The project aims to develop, characterize, and upscale production of efficient, resilient, and cost-effective modular sodium-ion battery systems. The technology utilizes biomass-based hard carbon and CO-derived carbon materials, including battery-grade graphite and carbon nanotubes. The resulting Na-based modular batteries are designed to be non-toxic, safe, recyclable, durable, with energy density and power metrics comparable to LiFePO4-based batteries, featuring favorable CAPEX, OPEX, and carbon footprint profiles. The consortium comprises partners from 7 different European countries and 2 affiliated entities.
