About
Founded in 2024, EXSOTHyC is a ngo specializing in Hydrogen, Energy Storage.
EXSOTHyC is a collaborative research project funded by the European Commission and Clean Hydrogen Partnership (GA 101137604) that runs from January 2024 to December 2026. The project brings together five international partners: Stargate Hydrogen (coordinator), Fraunhofer IFAM (Germany), Agfa Gevaert (Belgium), University of St. Andrews (UK), and Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands). The consortium focuses on developing and validating next-generation alkaline electrolyser short-stack prototypes with disruptive sub-components and breakthrough materials. Key innovations include alternative pathways for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions via new anode and cathode approaches, novel membrane-electrode assemblies based on Zirfon with integrated components, and innovative cell designs to enhance overall efficiency. The project combines computer simulations, rapid prototyping, and experimental validation using catalyst-coated diaphragms, powder metallurgy, and exsolution-fabricated ceramic nanoparticles. Research achievements include demonstrating alkaline water electrolysis at high current densities (3.5 A/cm²) with voltages as low as 2.3V using platinum-group-free catalysts, representing significant reductions compared to conventional nickel felt electrodes.
