Flasc is a Dutch cleantech company spun out from the University of Malta in December 2019, developing innovative offshore energy storage solutions. The company's proprietary Hydro-Pneumatic Energy Storage (HPES) technology combines compressed gas with an incompressible liquid piston to store energy with high efficiency and density. The system is designed for co-location with offshore wind and solar projects, addressing the mismatch between variable renewable generation and energy demand. Flasc targets utility-scale applications of at least 10MW and has validated its technology through a proof-of-concept prototype deployed in Malta's Grand Harbour in November 2017, which underwent 15 months of testing. The technology is particularly suited for green hydrogen production and offers a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to marinized lithium-ion batteries. The system uses predominantly steel, an inherently circular material, and operates with minimal environmental impact. Flasc collaborates with leading offshore partners including Subsea 7 and works with established supply chains to ensure cost-competitiveness. The company maintains active R&D partnerships with the University of Malta and participates in EU-funded projects.
