FLEXIGRID is a four-year EU Horizon 2020 research project (Grant Agreement No 864579) focused on improving electricity distribution grid operations to accommodate growing variable renewable energy sources. The project develops four hardware and four software solutions integrated through an open-source platform to address grid flexibility challenges. It aims to support Europe's 2030 renewable energy targets (50%+ electricity from RES) by enhancing grid reliability, stability, and security of supply. The project includes eight use cases spanning different grid scenarios: isolated valleys with high hydroelectric penetration, rural peri-urban networks, urban congested areas, and hotel resorts with distributed energy resources. Demo sites are located in Spain (Viesgo, Santander), Croatia (Elektra Zagreb), Italy (EDYNA, South Tyrol), and Greece (Makryammos Hotel, Thasos). CIRCE serves as project coordinator leading work packages on consortium management and algorithmic development for grid optimization, including fault detection and self-healing at medium voltage levels.
