Foremast is a Horizon Europe-funded research and innovation project focused on designing and demonstrating Small, Flexible, Automated, Zero-emission (SFAZ) vessels for sustainable transport of goods along inland waterways and coastal areas. The project addresses the need for cleaner, more efficient logistics solutions in urban and congested environments by enabling cargo shift from road to waterborne transport. Key objectives include examining techno-economic aspects of SFAZ vessels, innovating ship design through high automation and electric propulsion, developing guidelines for vessel deployment, and establishing regulatory frameworks for zero-emission maritime transport. The project involves multiple stakeholders including ALICE (European Technology Platform), Ghent University, and Magellan Circle, and includes Living Lab demonstrations in urban settings.
